Sleep Disturbed breathing

Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing during the night because of an obstructed airway. The obstruction is due to the tongue falling into the back of the throat and cutting off the air flow. These hypoxic events, long term, contribute to many life-threatening conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, just to name a few. Several methods have been devised to counteract this condition. The gold standard is a Continuous Positive Air Pressure machine (CPAP). Unfortunately, only a small number of people continue to use the CPAP machine after one year and fall back into having hypoxic episodes. When a patient no longer wishes to use their CPAP, we can fabricate an oral appliance that will open the airway and reduce the severity and number of the apneic episodes called Apneic-Hypoxic Index (AHI). Oral appliances travel well, make no noise, require no electricity, no head gear, and do not limit sleep position. These devices are a good alternative treatment that can reduce the AHI in mild to moderate cases.
